Citations needed for EB-1A

People ask for a number because a number feels like a rule. USCIS does not publish a citation cutoff for EB-1A. Officers read who cited you, whether they are independent, and whether the work mattered. A count without that is a resume line.

There is no official citation minimum

Scholarly articles are one of the ten criteria: authorship in professional or major trade publications. Citation volume is mostly a final-merits fact, not an automatic Step 1 yes. A paper in a real venue can support the authorship box with modest citations. A long list of self-cites does not show you are at the top of the field.

Google Scholar, Scopus, or a similar index is the exhibit. A sentence in the petition that says “500 citations” is not.

What usually matters more than the total

Independent citations, not your co-authors and not your employer. Citations that use the method, not only papers that mention it in a related-work paragraph. A venue other researchers in that specialty actually read. For software engineers, patents with proof of use and independent adoption often matter as much as a citation total, and sometimes more.

  • A high count inside one lab is still one group.
  • Review articles that cite everyone are weaker than papers that depend on your result.
  • No papers does not end the case. It means authorship is not your box. Patents, judging, a critical role, or press have to be real instead.
  • Comparing your count to a stranger’s Reddit approval is not evidence.

How to use the free check

Paste the resume, including the papers and the citation note if you have one. The free result says whether authorship looks supported and which other boxes are still empty. It will not tell you that 200 citations, or 50, or 1,000, is the number USCIS wants. There isn’t one.
